Bark Out: Tracking Basics

Let’s use the quiet of winter frost and undisturbed sand to our advantage!

Warrior Rock Lighthouse Trail

38151 A&B NW Reeder Rd, Portland, OR 97231

Meet me, Haley, at the Warrior Rock Lighthouse Trail on Sauvies Island at 9 am and we will hopefully get some good tracking experience in. If we make it to the Lighthouse, it is a 6-mile trail that is fairly flat and clear. This is also a great time for seeing bald eagles and sandhill cranes.

It will likely be chilly, so come dressed for the weather. Trails will likely be icy/muddy so wear appropriate footwear. Feel free to bring a thermos, warm snacks, and/or handwarmers for yourself.

Parking Permits ($10) Can be purchased at:

Oregon Dept. of Fish and Wildlife – 18330 NW Sauvie Island Road – 503.621.3488
The Cracker Barrel Store – 15005 NW Sauvie Island Road
Reeder Beach RV Country Store – 26048 NW Reeder Road
7-11 Convenience Store – 11310 NW St Helens Rd (off Island)
Topaz Farm – 17100 NW Sauvie Island Road

All hike participants will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss the ecology, history, and current social dimensions of the area.

We will spend the day moving through the forest, both on roads and off-trail, walking over uneven terrain, with down logs, and possible ice and snow. We will make numerous stops for discussion, please come prepared to keep yourself warm and comfortable in the weather. Check back for the exact distance closer to the event.
