Bark Out: Nettle Workshop

Join us for an informative and hands-on workshop dedicated to propagating stinging nettle (Urtica dioica) in your garden. Hosted by long-time Bark volunteer and owner of Handmade Gardens Regenerative Homestead Education, Rachel Freifelder at her beautiful personal garden. Stinging nettle is a valuable plant known for its nutritional, medicinal, and crafting properties, but it is often over-harvested in the wild. This workshop aims to teach you sustainable methods to grow and maintain your own little nettle patch at home.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Introduction to Stinging Nettle: Understand the benefits of stinging nettle. Nettles are a delicious, nutritious wild food, medicine, and support crop.
  • Propagation Techniques: Learn various methods to propagate stinging nettle, and go home with your own rhizome. We’ll cover the best times of year for each method and the specific steps involved.
  • Planting and Care: Discover the ideal conditions for growing stinging nettle, such as soil type, moisture levels, and sunlight requirements. We’ll also discuss how to manage its growth to prevent it from overrunning.
  • Harvesting and Usage: Get tips on safely harvesting stinging nettle and how to use it in teas, soups, and salves. Participants will also learn about the nutritional benefits of nettle and how to incorporate it into their diet.
