Using Colonizers: Holly and Beginner’s Whittling
Let’s take an in-depth look at the history and uses of the highly invasive holly, ilex aquifolium. We’ll look into why it was introduced, how it has impacted our PNW environment, and how we can use it responsibly. After the warm-up, we’ll begin an intro to whittling workshop for adults! Some supplies can and will be provided, but bring your own whittling knife (fixed blade or locking blade) if possible. Our whittling workshop will have 3 possible themes that YOU will vote on at the beginning of the class:
1. Technique: the true “whittling” option, work on a simple project like a wand or walking stick with guided instruction on how to use the tools and achieve a desired effect.
2. Tool: A more in-depth discussion and practice on cleaning and sharpening a knife, understanding a “blade profile” and how to tell good steel from bad.
3. Tradition: a more open form of practice and discussion with lower-risk tools like files, sandpaper, chisels, etc. Focused on utilizing holly’s distinctive color layers in making decorative patterns.
The location of the workshop itself will be indoors at Bark’s Office at 351 NE 18th Avenue, Portland, OR. 97232. This event will be classroom-style learning so bring pencil and paper if you want to take notes. Gender-neutral restrooms will be available.
Thank you!
