Bark Out: Uncommon Plants

Join Native Plant Society of Oregon field trip leader Kieran Hanrahan for an introduction to some common and uncommon native plants of Mt. Hood National Forest.
We’ll learn how to identify the plants around us and about resources we can use to teach ourselves the botany of the Pacific Northwest. We’ll cover plants found in mid-elevation mature forests and some plants that grow on rocky outcrops. We should see some in bloom!
Meet us at the Larch Mountain parking and trailhead.
The Larch Mountain parking lot is large and accommodates more than 50 vehicles. Toilets are available and maintained. A valid Recreation Pass is required.
Directions from Portland, OR – Follow I-84 east and take exit 22 for Corbett. Turn right on Corbett Hill Road and drive to the top of the hill. Take a left onto the Historic Columbia River Highway and follow it for 2 miles to the junction with Larch Mountain Road. You’ll see a cubic art piece in someone’s yard on the right ahead of the junction. Keep right, following signs to Larch Mountain. Stay on Larch Mountain Road for 14 miles. You will pass other parking areas and pull offs, but stay on Larch Mountain Road until you reach the parking lot at the very end where we’ll meet.
We will spend the day moving through the forest on trail, walking over uneven terrain, with down logs, possible mud, and water. We will make numerous stops for discussion and personal reflection; please come prepared to keep yourself warm and comfortable in the weather.
